About

I am a breast cancer research advocate and  Breast Cancer Advocate is a place for me to blog for CHANGE.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the day after Mother’s Day in 2007.  It was shocking for me, my husband, and my three kids who were 7, 11, and 15 at the time.  I had no risk factors and a family tree of pioneers who almost always lived into their 90′s.  I coped by gathering as much information as I could.  I jumped into advocacy pretty quickly, after realizing how much was still unknown about breast cancer – what causes it, why it spreads in some to take their lives and not in others, and how to stop its growth.  I found out that the treatments hadn’t changed a whole lot over the years, and still involved the equivalent of trying to drop a bomb on the cancer.  Survivors hope the bombs do the trick, but also worry about what other problems they will have from the bombs.

We need change, and a lot of it.

Here I will write about the news, advocacy, research, and legislation on breast cancer.   I enjoy writing and am passionate about finding a cure.  I studied environmental studies and political science in college, and nutritional biochemistry in graduate school.  I’ve worked as a researcher, a medical reporter,  a nutritionist, a proposal writer, and am currently the Director of Research and Quality Care Programs at the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC).

Congratulations, Laura! I’m absolutely thrilled that you’ve decided to start a blog on breast cancer advocacy. With just a few postings, you’ve already created an incredible resource that will be invaluable to so many. I hope it’s okay for me to say this, but I’m SO proud of you! I’m thrilled that you’ve found something that will give you the opportunity to use your many talents and will allow so many breast cancer survivors and advocates to receive the benefit of your insight. Warmly, Deb

Hi—your blog entry about the life style article was forwarded to the BC support group I belong to. THANK YOU!

I was affronted by the article when I read it the NY Times—and doubted the “facts” since they countered what I knew. I tried to find their sources — and am glad you had more powers of perseverance than I.

I am healthy as far as I know: breast cancer dx 11 years ago, stage III, 5 positive nodes, ER positive IDC, lumpectomy, taxotere and adriamycin, rads, 5 years tamoxifen and 4 years arimidex; now 62 years old

    Hi Laura,
Glad to see a Greek name in the right place! I was driven to your blog through a post on twitter. I attended the conference last year as an intl trainee and really I was impressed. NBCC conference is very different from similar conferences in Europe. You are doing a terrific job in breast cancer advocacy and I have taken several lessons back home.
    Wish you a successful conference
